E. Saarinen briefly

Born on 27 July 1953, living his childhood and youth in Hyvinkää, a small town in southern Finland. High school graduatate 1972, Hyvinkään Uusi Yhteiskoulu.

Studied in University of Helsinki majoring in Theoretical Philosophy. Teachers included Oiva Ketonen, Jaakko Hintikka, S. Albert Kivinen, Krister Segerberg, and G.H. von Wright. Admired Sibelius scholar Erik Tawaststerna's radiant lecturing style.

Master of Philosophy 1975, Licentiate of Philosophy 1976, Doctor of Philosophy 1978 (dissertation 1977), all at University of Helsinki. Subject of the dissertation: Backwards-Looking Operators in Intensional Logic and in Natural Language.

Scholarly visits to England, Holland, USA (UCLA, 1978-9; University of Texas at Austin, 1981).

Cultural impact through media appearances, writings and lectures. Since 1980 Saarinen has constantly appared on Finnish tv and radio, in magazines, newspapers, serious and less serious, becoming a household name. Breaking new ground with the concept and practice of "media philosophy", Saarinen has brought philosophy far beyond the academic classroom and has helped to establish philosophy as an exciting and engaging discipline. Saarinen has been a key force in the rise of the contemporary relevance and popularity of philosophy in the country.

In addition to changing the image of philosophy in the media, Saarinen has broken new ground for philosophy in the corporate world and work life at large. He has been a key driver in establishing philosophy as a recognized force in the context of modern Finnish management thinking. Serving as a lecturer and a coach for Finnish companies and organisations for over a decade, Saarinen has become a leading figure in the field of mental coaching and philosophy of life in Finland. Saarinen has worked extensively with Nokia since 1995.

Saarinen lives with his Special Lady, the Queen and their twin boys (born 1989) in the center of Helsinki.
