I admire Mailer's charisma and articulate force. Years back, I encountered his mesmerazing charm in the film When We Were Kings, an outstanding documentary on Muhammad Ali's fight with George Foreman in Zaire, where Mailer's commntary is an integrating force that holds the film together. Here Mailer is talking about his work, books and thinking, connecting his own history as a writer to the history of the USA, the country he loves and hates. Mailer's analysis is brilliant throughout. Even if you don't agree with his verdicts you will find it astonishing how someone can capture so much in just a few sentences. Mailer is true master of crystallization, a towering figure in letters and words.
